Navigating the Maze of Health and Willpower

Every day, I face the question of how I've cultivated such a potent discipline toward maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Many speculate that I must constantly battle temptations, especially for sweets and high-carb delights, yet I seem to effortlessly resist them. However, the reality is far from what's perceived. Contrary to being 'naturally slim,’ I once carried an extra 25 kilos on my frame. I know all too well the discomfort, disempowerment, and health issues that come with being overweight.

This journey has taught me that achieving my life's ambitions requires not only physical and mental fortitude but also clarity of mind and robust self-esteem. My observations of friends, family, and clients over the years, many of whom have struggled or succumbed to lifestyle-related illnesses, coupled with my deep understanding of human biology, have fostered a profound respect within me for my body. I'm acutely aware that our health is a gift that shouldn’t be taken for granted. We all have one heart, one liver, one set of lungs, and it's our responsibility to protect their wellbeing rather than compromise it through poor choices.

Acknowledging that every decision has its price has been a game-changer for me. I remember a conversation with a client who felt obliged to indulge in hot cross buns and an excessive amount of chocolate to enjoy Easter. While she might have deemed the consequence acceptable, or perhaps didn’t fully consider it, for me, the health implications are far too significant. It’s not a matter of summoning tremendous willpower; I simply view such foods as non-options. This mindset shift is akin to deciding against smoking 20 cigarettes over the weekend for the sake of celebrating Easter. It's a definitive no for me.

I’m not advocating for a life of strict abstinence or perfection. However, I believe it’s crucial to recognise the toll our decisions—particularly those involving frequent poor dietary choices and neglecting physical activity—take on our health. These choices come with a cost, one that can significantly impact our wellbeing over time. Thus, making conscious, health-driven decisions is not about denying oneself joy but rather choosing a life of quality and fulfillment, respecting the only body we have. It’s about deciding the price we’re willing to pay and understanding the long-term value of our health over momentary pleasures.
